5 of 5 A Real Peace of Mind Tuesday, June 24, 2008 Satish Toshkhani from Cockeysville, MD
I bought the 2 TB disk approximately 18 months after I had bought the 1 TB one. I was very happy with the first purchase. That time I did not use its RAID 1 capability. Now I have both the units configured for RAID 1. Performance wise, the disk works like a champ. Once in a while it does make a little fan noise, but that is when you use the unit for an extended period and if it is heated up. I use the unit to the max. At times it is running for days together. I suggest using Firewire interface instead of USB for optimum performance. I strongly recommend the unit, if you want to backup your important files, music, videos and have peace of mind of never ever losing your precious data with RAID 1 configuration. The device itself is pretty nice. Relatively quiet (I can only hear the HDDs when they're being actively used). Performance is great (I use it primarily with Time Machine).
But they really have to improve their software. I'm still unable to upgrade the firmware - the update script gives some cryptic errors (on Leopard). Even the latest version of their "RAID manager" is extremely simplistic, but yet it did take me a while to figure out how to switch the unit to RAID1 mode.
But once I've done that, the Time Machine has been working flawlessly with the device. I got it at a pretty nice discount, so the value for me is high..

5 of 5 Works great on my Mac! Tuesday, May 27, 2008 Susan from Orange Park, FL
I recently purchased this drive on the advice of my trainer in my Apple One to One session. My 500 G drive was almost filled with raw video footage that I am working with to put my lifelong family film on DVD. He suggested a 2 TB drive with a RAID array so that it could also serve as my backup drive as I had not been backing up my footage at that point. I found this drive priced much more reasonably than others I had looked at. Since I have two other WD external drives that have worked well, I didn't hesitate to purchase another one. My Apple trainer helped me set up the drive and transfer all my files to it with ease. It works great with my MacBook Pro laptap! Was this review helpful?

Lots of disk space with a few ways to connect to the PC. I run with full capacity which provides a nice amount of space in a single box. Was this review helpful?

Where do I start with this device? I bought this because I wanted 1TB of RAIDed hard disk I could drop wherever. Instead I get a noisy, hot device that requires custom drivers and is very picky about when it is and isn't going to work.
First of all you need a driver to use this drive. So OS X and Windows are the only systems you can use it on. The OS X setup is abysmal. You can tell Windows developers got roped into coding that one.
Second of all the drive is VERY picky about how it's going to work. I first tried it on USB with FAT32 on Windows. Worked okay. Moved it to OS X. No go. After setting it up, I had to format from scratch to HFS+. Finally I can now write files properly. Oh wait, what's that? USB isn't reliable? Okay, I'll switch to Firewire and have to ditch my other Firewire devices (I have a Mac Mini with a single Firewire port). But wait, you're still not happy? I was instructed by Western Digital to NOT plug the hard drive into a powerboard, but instead plug it directly into the wall.
So now it works. And now that it is working, it seems okay. Nothing special. I'm skeptical that the RAID will actually protect the data, but we'll see. DO NOT buy this if you don't have a lot of time on you're hands, and DEFINITELY do not buy this if you're not technically competent. Was this review helpful?

It was a great hard drive until it caught on fire! I immediately contacted customer service, and they sent out a new 2TB drive right away. It was actually kind of amusing to tell them why I was requesting an RMA! The second hard drive works like a champ. Was this review helpful?

Awesome price for 2TB!!!!! Also, great speed with the firewire ports. I've had it for two weeks so far, and it hasn't failed me. Was this review helpful?
3 of 5 Good deal if you want Raid 0 or 1 Sunday, April 27, 2008 A Customer from Falls Church, VA
Not a bad unit for sure. The firewire 800/400 is a good step up from USB 2, and it is nice that they are all present. Note that this unit is not only wider than the smaller 500G units, but also taller and deeper. Same slow spin up that all the ED MyBooks have, and a bit louder than the smaller ones too.
The biggest negative for me is that the drive is ONLY usable in a Raid configuration, which I hadn't realized until after my purchase - my own fault since it does actually say this in the product description. That leaves me with a drive with a reliability that is quite a bit lower than the base units. Hopefully, this will not come back to haunt me, so we will see. Was this review helpful?

I purchased 2 of these 2TB drives to act as my iTunes storage locations.
1 for my movies and 1 for my TV shows.
These drives are wonderful. They have some fan noise but not to the extent to be annoying. The only time they are loud is at startup.
I paired them to my Macintosh with no problems.
For the dollar amount spent compared to ease of use and the size of the drive....
I would not think twice about buying more of these drives.
I give these drives a A+ Was this review helpful?
